Smart drought response in arable farming

The four-year project ‘Zoetwaterboeren‘ (Freshwater Farming) has recently concluded successfully. It all started with arable farmer Klaas Schenk from Anna Paulowna, in the north of the Netherlands, who increasingly faced the effects of climate change, such as prolonged drought periods. To better prepare his farm for these new conditions, he searched for innovative ways to use water more efficiently.

What began as a personal search evolved into a broad collaborative project involving many organizations from the agricultural and technological sectors. Together, they worked on solutions to improve the availability and use of freshwater on farms.

Further development toward a self-steering systemAlthough the project has formally ended, further development of the system continues. The ultimate goal is a multifunctional dashboard that seamlessly connects various systems and can operate partially autonomously.

What is water management in agriculture?
Water management in agriculture is collecting water, storing it and putting it back to use at the right moment on a farm. In the Freshwater Farming project this is done with modified drainage that holds rainwater instead of carrying it away, an underground store, and a dashboard that shows when a crop needs water.
How does rainwater harvesting work on an arable farm?
Rainwater that seeps through the soil in autumn and winter is collected by drainage pipes and pumped through wells to a silo on the yard. From there it goes into the ground, where a freshwater store is created at thirty metres depth above a hard layer. That requires a permit, which was granted for this project. In summer the same water comes back onto the land.
How is collected water purified in agriculture?
The water first passes through a sand filter that removes the coarse material. Next comes an activated carbon unit, a vessel full of bacteria that eat the dirt. That leaves behind crop protection products among other things, which you do not want to carry into the soil because soil and groundwater would become contaminated. Only then does the water go to the storage vessel.
What is controlled drainage?
Ordinary drainage carries rainwater away. With controlled drainage you can regulate the water level in the pipes yourself. At Zoetwaterboeren the existing drainage was rebuilt so the water is held back instead of drained off. The main drain is connected to wells with pumps in them, and the level is raised as soon as the crop needs water.
