Cars are increasingly fitted with handy extras that let you keep a closer eye on all sorts of things, and now the same is possible for caravans.

How does a smart app for your caravan work?

The Smart-Trailer is a base module that connects to your phone over Bluetooth. You can attach all kinds of sensors to it, and whatever they measure shows up on your phone. The first option is a levelling module, which lets you check on your phone whether the caravan is standing level.

The Smart-Trailer is a module that can house a range of different sensors. You decide for yourself which ones you want to use and activate them through an app on your phone.

E-Level for caravans

The E-Level can be used to get the caravan level, for example. Another module is in development to check tyre pressure, and the founders of E-trailer are nowhere near out of ideas.

Kampeer en Caravan Jaarbeurs

The Smart-Trailer will be launched at the Kampeer en Caravan Jaarbeurs, the Dutch camping and caravan trade fair, running from 12 to 16 October. From 1 March 2017, the Smart-Trailer will be available through retailers.

Which sensors can you connect in a caravan?

In principle an unlimited number, because you can link endlessly many sensors to it. Think of the temperature of your brakes: if they overheat, you get a pop-up on your screen. Or the tyre pressure, where you receive a push message if it is not right. There are also noseweight measurement, weight measurement, temperature and the mileage reading. All of that improves the safety of driving with a trailer.

Where do you buy a system like this and can you fit it yourself?

The Smart-Trailer module will be available from caravan retailers from 1 March. If you are reasonably handy you can install the system yourself, but it is recommended to have it done by an authorised retailer.

Why would you want to fit your caravan with sensors?

Because cars have been doing it for ages. There you can see what the tyre pressure is and when a service is due. The makers wondered why you would not show that for a trailer or a caravan as well.
