Why do entrepreneurs go bankrupt unnecessarily?
Entrepreneurs who get into financial difficulty tend to sound the alarm too late. The struggle to stay out of debt sometimes ends in bankruptcy at exactly the moment when it isn't necessary at all.
Who comes knocking with debts?
A cross section of enterprising Netherlands, because it can happen to anyone.
It often begins with a life event, you fall ill. If you're self-employed you may have disability insurance, but it never covers the whole burden. Over 23 years, Jacqueline Zuidweg and her team have helped some 40,000 entrepreneurs, people who, as she puts it, are clinging to the edge of the ravine by their fingertips.
Are you turned away if you come forward?
In principle, no. Right from the start, it's made clear how the debt arrangement works, and that calls for complete openness. The debt is then tackled based on the possibilities of the future, rather than on what went wrong in the past.
Why is it more than arranging finances?
Because it's about communication. You have to be able to speak the same language as the entrepreneur, says Jacqueline. She describes herself and her people as a kind of half-psychologist, and that begins the moment someone registers. Debt often goes hand in hand with marital or relationship problems, and the divorce rate is many times higher than among those in a stable financial situation. People lie awake over it. And all of that, she says, over that wretched money, when it can actually be sorted out.
Debt help for entrepreneurs
"Debt can be arranged based on the possibilities of the future" is how Jacqueline Zuidweg sums it up.
The 52-year-old entrepreneur runs three companies in the field of debt assistance, Zuidweg & Partners, Schulden.nl, and MKB Doorstart.
