Recommendations from Koos

In this third video on New Leadership, Koos discusses, among other things, the book Authentieke leiders, echte leiders and shares a number of his own recommendations from it, a book he co-wrote with Sylvia Main. These are lessons drawn from practice that have proven their worth. In total, the book brings together 183 tips, insights, and experiences, contributed by the likes of Marshall Goldsmith, Jan Gunnarsson, Kristi LeBlanc, and Hanneke van Gompel. So how did the book come about?

It started with a remark during a retreat

In 2011, Koos Groenewoud attended a retreat with Paul de Blot, professor of business spirituality at Nyenrode, where one of the participants told him he really ought to do something about his weight. Losing weight turned out to be an expensive hobby, dropping six kilos cost him 600 euros. As a former cook, he decided to take a different approach, cooking differently and eating differently, and from there the results came quickly.

Why it's not about weight but about ballast

The topic was still on his mind when he stumbled across "85 Ways to Lose Real Weight" online. Reading it, he realised it wasn't about kilos at all, but about ballast. The author suggested things like thanking people, offering them help, appreciating them, and acknowledging them. Koos recognised a lot of his own thinking in it.

How these 85 reached a wider European audience

He got in touch with the author, Kristi LeBlanc, to ask whether he could translate them. With considerable help from Sylvia Main, a Dutch version took shape, followed by Spanish, Catalan, French, Italian, and German editions. Koos likes to call these translations gifts to the world.

What else is in the book?

At a certain point, Sylvia Main suggested that those 85 really deserved to be expanded, and that grew into 98 further lessons worth learning from. The book pulls together Marshall Goldsmith's 20 bad habits of leaders, the principles of servant leadership, 16 practical tips from top executive Henno Janmaat, the seven golden insights of businesswoman Hanneke van Gompel, the work of Kristi LeBlanc, and 18 recommendations drawn from Koos's own experience.

Frequently asked questions

This is a short summary of the film. Watch the video above for the full story.

Which five words should you use more often according to Koos Groenewoud?
According to Groenewoud you can manage with five words instead of management books: thank you, help (can I help you or will you help me), sorry when you have done something wrong, fine and well done. Anyone who uses these words more often sees not only business life but ordinary life become a great deal more pleasant.
What does criticism mean according to Koos Groenewoud?
Groenewoud argues that criticism is an opportunity and a complaint is a present: be open to feedback and do something with it, because complainers are people who care. He gives an example in which an employee who did not rate the management positively was almost dismissed, with the result that the satisfaction surveys turned out very differently the following year.
What does the 'management by exception' principle involve?
With management by exception you put no time into the normal routine and do not interfere with it, because your people know exactly how it should be done. Just make sure they can find you when there really is an exception, so that you can help then.
