Bureau LODZ, run by Robert Jan de Roo, helps entrepreneurs uncover the stumbling blocks that are holding their business back. Because thriving enterprise goes hand in hand with growth, change, innovation, expansion, and enjoyment.

How does a firm like this come about?

From forty years out on the road. Robert Jan drove from one company to the next, first from a technical background and later in sales. Every time he walked into a business, he found he could already sense the atmosphere at reception, whether things were going well, whether a company was on the brink of bankruptcy, or whether it was being run in an authoritarian way. Later it struck him how valuable it would be if he could point that out to entrepreneurs, so they could run their business differently.

What does a conversation like that produce?

An honest overview, as he puts it himself, of how the business really works, with no punches pulled. Once that's been digested, a way forward starts to take shape, and that's exactly what every entrepreneur needs to lead their company. Sometimes it confirms what you already knew, and sometimes he raises something you'd never considered. If that fresh perspective sticks, the strategy follows, which goals, with which people, and what needs to change.

No standard coach, he puts his finger on the sore spot

This unconventional business adviser also helps entrepreneurs find the best way to tackle those bottlenecks.

Thanks to his unusual approach, Robert Jan is no "standard" coach, he has a knack for putting his finger on the sore spot time and again. And if, as an entrepreneur, you'd rather it didn't get out that you're bringing in an adviser, Robert Jan can act as an anonymous sparring partner.

The business scan finds blockages, from layout to absenteeism

With the business scan, Robert Jan can track down all kinds of blockages. Some come down to the layout of a room, while others are organisational bottlenecks. Entrepreneurs struggling with a high rate of sick leave, for example, can turn to him to find out what's behind it.

Personal Leadership working group, ten participants at most

Anyone keen to work on their personal leadership can join the working group that meets once a month. No more than ten people take part in this training, and they come from all over the Netherlands. You can find more about it on the Bureau LODZ website.

Frequently asked questions

This is a short summary of the film. Watch the video above for the full story.

What is a business scan?
An intuitive observation. Robert Jan walks through the entire company together with the entrepreneur and does not skip a single room. He looks all the staff briefly in the eye and shakes hands with every manager, in order to get an impression and to taste the atmosphere in which people, resources and products are dealt with. He also pays attention to how people sit physically and whether the spaces are laid out well.
When do you call in a business adviser?
Often when things are not going wrong, but are not moving forward either. Entrepreneurs say that the business is still running but that nothing is happening any more, and ask him to have a look at what the cause of that is.
Why call in an adviser who works on intuition?
According to an entrepreneur in the film it is pleasant to involve someone who gives his intuition free rein, because you often fall into the trap yourself of analysing everything purely rationally. Robert Jan indicates that he senses that something else is going on, after which they search together and things come up that would otherwise not have surfaced. Sometimes he really does say something you had not considered at all.
