Krikke from Grou, wholesaler with its own butchery

🎬 Multilingual subtitles
✍️ By: Team BC1.NL

What is the Vleesatelier?

That's the name of the company's own butchery, and it wasn't chosen by chance. Everything they do with meat is done with passion, much like an artist working on a painting. The work is carried out by people rather than machines. The meat is cut by hand, the mince ground, the sausage made, and the burger pressed. Pure craftsmanship.

Can you decide for yourself what you get?

Yes. Anyone who wants to can deal with the butcher personally, so they get exactly the product they're after. One steak or a hundred steaks, any weight and any product you like. It's prepared the following morning.

Why do catering businesses choose this?

For the distinctive quality and the way the work is done with the customer in mind. The company is smaller than its larger competitors and, as a result, far more personal, with a quality the owner considers superior.

Which regional products come out of it?

Demand is growing for products from the region, and for products with a story behind them, the breed, the origin, the way it's prepared, and the time the meat is left to mature so it develops a certain intensity. There's pork known as the spiced pig from Gaasterland, and Frisian pasture beef slaughtered in Surhuisterveen. That feel for the surroundings and the background counts for more and more.

Solar panels on the building and on the vans

Krikke Culinaire Groothandel is a family business from Grou, in the Netherlands, that has grown over 65 years into a versatile, modern wholesaler in food and non-food, where sustainable enterprise is highly valued.

That shows in the care taken for the environment, among other things. Besides recycling as much waste as possible, the company makes clever use of solar energy. Both the building in Grou and the vans out on the road rely on solar panels that supply a large share of their energy needs.

Delivery in Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe and North Holland

Customers of Krikke Culinaire Groothandel can place an order up until 5 in the morning and still receive delivery that same morning. To be able to guarantee its personal service, Krikke mainly serves customers in the provinces of Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe, and North Holland. It's also why Krikke is one of the exhibitors at Horeca EvenTT in Assen.

Nominated for the High Growth Awards 2015

That Krikke's approach works is clear from their nomination for the High Growth Awards 2015. In these awards, companies from all over the Netherlands compete for the title of best growth company in their region. The High Growth Awards is an initiative of Port4Growth, a platform for growth companies, run in partnership with Rabobank, Grant Thornton, and Philips.

Frequently asked questions

This is a short summary of the film. Watch the video above for the full story.

What is a culinary wholesaler?
A wholesaler that supplies the kitchen of a catering business completely: traditionally made meat products, dairy, frozen goods and its own snacks, supplemented with vegetables and fish through fresh produce partners and some non-food in support.
Where does this wholesaler deliver?
In Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe and Noord-Holland. The fleet is organised in such a way that a van can in principle be at any customer within an hour.
What time do you have to order to get delivery the same morning?
Until five in the morning. If you ring later in the day because you are short of something, it is still brought round the same day. Orders can be placed six days a week, and if it is needed they come on Sunday as well.
What is a meat atelier?
That is the name of the company's own butchery. The work is done with people and not with machines: the meat is cut by hand, the mince ground, the sausage made and the burger pressed. The name refers to working with passion, like an artist with his painting.
Can you decide yourself how your meat is cut?
Yes. Anyone who wants to has direct contact with the butcher. Any weight and any product is possible, from one steak to a hundred steaks, and that is prepared the following morning.
How long has the company existed?
Since 1951, when it started as a meat products wholesaler. Grandfather Gerrit began, father Henk took it over and is still an ambassador, and brother Bas works in the company as well.
Which regional products come from Friesland?
Pork from Gaasterland that is called the spiced pig there, and Frisian pasture beef that is slaughtered for the wholesaler in Surhuisterveen. Demand for products from the region is growing, with a story attached about the breed, the origin, the preparation and the time the meat is given to mature.
How can delivery with refrigerated vans be made more sustainable?
The seven refrigerated and freezer vans have Euro 6 engines and solar panels on the roof that feed the cooling. The roof of the building in Grou is covered with solar panels as well, which generate a large part of the energy for the company.
Why do catering businesses choose a smaller wholesaler?
Because it is more personal. The company is smaller than its large colleagues and therefore works with the customer more in mind: everything is possible, any weight and any product, in the better quality.
